Foundations of Software Business

The book Foundations of Software Business systematically and comprehensively addresses the challenges and opportunities of a software business and the software industry as a whole, including the relationships between a software business and its major end-users. Issues that distinguish software from other businesses are emphasized, and each issue is examined from whatever disciplinary and practical perspectives offer understanding and perspective. The book is not a research monograph -- contributions of this type can be captured in the Software Business Encyclopedia. Rather, it captures the current state of understanding from the research literature (both traditional disciplines and research specific to software business) and practical experience. A traditional edited book with many authors, the book can capture a breadth of coverage and diversity of perspective that would elude any single or small group of authors. The use of a wiki-based collaboration platform empowers a level of coordination and coherence not feasible with traditional edited books.

The book is open access: anybody can read it online or create a printed copy for themselves. In the future we plan to make a printed-and-bound version available for sale as well.

Table of contents

We have created this table of contents to illustrate the topics and scope. As yet there is little substance to the chapters other than a brief introduction. Authors are being recruited, and you can volunteer to contribute to a chapter where you feel special expertise! Inevitably there will be changes to the organization and scope as the Editors and Authors fall into place.
